Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary Jamnagar

Gaga Wildlife sanctuary is located in the Bhatia Taluka of Jamnagar District of Gujarat. It was established in 1988 and currently is spread over 3332.87 hectares. It is located in the Saurashtra peninsula on the coast of the Gulf of Kutch. The sanctuary is divided into two areas by a 2kms waste land between them. The sanctuary is made up wide- ranging landscape and is made up of grassland, saline scrub, prosposis chilentis, kerdo and piloo. The closest town to the sanctuary is Bhatia which is about 20 kilometers away and is located near the city of Jamnagar.

The various types of animals founds in the sanctuary are the blue bull, the jackal, the jungle cat, the mongoose and the wolf. Along with these animals there are different types of insects, which thrive in abundance here. These include butterflies, moths, honeybee, wasps, spiders, and termites. The shrubs and grasses form an indigenous home for various migratory birds which come from different parts of the world. The various types of birds found here include the flamingo, the great Indian Bustard, the lark, the partridge, and the sand grouse. The sanctuary has great conservation significance as the Great Indian Buster, which is an endangered species has been sighted here in 1976.

A major problem that the sanctuary is facing is from the local people who bring their cattle to graze on these lands, which are causing damage to the grassland. There has been no major action taken to solve this problem by the authorities or by the government. One way out of this situation is to fence the two areas of the sanctuary so that there is no trespass of the local population or their livestock into the grasslands. One another problem is the damage to the ecosystem because of increase in salt content in the land and water sue to sea being near.

Many tourist accommodations are available in Bhatia and of course in Jamnagar which is a distance away from the town. If a person wants a star hotel, then it is advisable to stay in Jamnagar and Bhatia is a small town and wouldn’t have luxury facilities.
