Jamnagar is a quintessence of modern India: a place where heritage meets modern economic prosperity.  The city was set up in 1540 AD by Jam Rava Jadeja and served as the capital city of the royal state of Nawanager. Later the city was developed completely under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.  Indeed today’s Jamnagar retains much of its old world charm amidst booming economic prosperity.

History lovers will not be disappointed at Jamnagar.  There is plenty to see from the picturesque Ranmal Lake to the futuristic Solarium.  Following are some of the key places to visit:

  • Darbargadh Palace: This is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture and a real visual treat indeed.
  • Lakhota Fort: Located in the center of Ranmal Lake, the fort is today a museum containing one of the oldest collections of medieval sculpture and arsenal.
  • Pratap Vilas Palace: heavily influenced by the Victoria Memorial of Kolkata, the palace was the former royal residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and is a unique blend of Indian and European architecture.
  • Solarium: also known as the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy, the structure built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to provide treatment for skin diseases using solar power.

Localities/Areas of Religious Significance

Visitors with a spiritual bent of mind can visit the numerous temples scattered around the city. The temples attract fairly huge crowds throughout the year and are centers of bustling activity. Some of the major temples located in the city are:
  • Mota Ashapura Ma Temple: located close to the Darbargadh and the old city area, this place temple served as the main place of worship for the erstwhile rulers of Jamnagar.
  • Shantinath Mandir: a prominent Jain temple known for its intricate sculptural designs.
  • Vardhman Shah’s Temple:  a prominent Jain temple built in the 17th century.
  • Bala Hanuman Temple: one of the most visited temples in the area, Bala Hanuman Temple is famous the world over for setting the world record for the continous chanting of the ‘jai ram’ mantra since 1964.
While touring the city visitors come across many towers and gates which are the remnants of the old fortifications built by the previous rulers of Jamnagar. Mandvi tower, Grain Market Gate and Pancheshwar Tower are worth a visit.

Localities/Areas in Jamnagar for Shopping

Located around the area of the Jain temples Shantinath Mandir and Adinath Mandir is a section of the old city popularly known as the ‘Chandi Bazaar. Apart from the temples, the area exudes an old world charm of a bygone era and is a thriving shopping district. Willingdon Cresent is another shopping area that will remind visitors of old city shopping arcades of European cities. Built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, this place is heavily influenced by his travels to Europe. It now serves as one of the primary shopping areas of the city.

Localities/Areas for Wildlife

Nature loving visitors will have their fill by visiting the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary located 10 km outside the city and the Marine National Park located on Pirotan Island located off the coast of Jamnagar.  The Marine National Park is the only marine sanctuary in India. The area is well known for its coral reefs, dense mangrove forests and is home to a large variety of rare marine species.  Visitors can also visit the Rozi and Bedi Ports which apart from being the busiest ports in the country attract fishermen and amateur anglers across the country.
