Pirotan Island Jamnagar

Jamnagar is better known as home of Maharaja Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji who put it on the world cricketing map with his batting prowess. Not many know that Jamnagar, along the coast of Gujarat, near Kutch, abounds in natural sanctuaries and is home to hundreds of thousands of birds. Luckily for the birds Government has taken strong conservation measures to protect their habitat and provide a safe, secure sanctuary where they can live and breed in peace. Pirotan Island off the Jamnagar coast is one such paradise for birds and a heaven for bird watchers who make a beeline to this island from all over the world.

Access to Pirotan Island Jamnagar

As a matter of fact, there are about 42 island off the coast, some inhabited, some uninhabited. Visitors are allowed access only to Pirotan Island and Narara Islands. Access is difficult since a visitor has to time his visit to coincide with high tides, the timings of which changes with the moon. You have to obtain permission from the authorities and can only take a designated boat to reach the Pirotan Island for the purpose of admiring nature’s diversity and the birds in particular.

Before you do charter a boat ride, you must obtain permission from the Forest Department, the Customs and the Port authorities. Your hotel in Jamnagar may be able to assist with such permissions. Boats are available from Nava port or Bedi port in Jamnagar to travel to the island, a 12 mile trip.

Tips to Trip Around Pirotan Island

  • Fix the timings in consultation with local boat owners who know best about tides.
  • Plan your trip early in the morning, allowing an hour and a half to get you there so you have a whole day on Pirotan.
  • Schedule your return to coincide with high tide, something your boat owner should be familiar with. The island has no facilities so visitors need to carry their provisions including water and plan on returning in the evening.
  •  Wear thick soled rubber boots since rocky beaches have sharp stones littered about. The island is part of the Marine National Park and became popular as a nature destination only recently. Pilgrims have been visiting the island since over a century to pay homage at the shrine of Khwaja Khijer Rahmatullahialaih.
